Can't wait to have a full meal! I'm so hungry and have no have absolutely no food left. These past couple days were definitely the hardest, althought not impossible, but I still can't imagine having to live like this.
The end of day four and I'm so exhausted (not so much from lack of sleep but from the lack of nutritious food and caffeine withdrawal-still!) it takes me a lot longer to concentrate on what I'm reading and doing my homework. I also find myself dozing off during work and during my night class, my participation level was at an all time low. I find myself wanting to sleep to distract myself from wanting to go buy a cheeseburger and fries. This experience has definetly made me appreciate how privledged I am and to not take my meal plan and seaco for granted!
On the topic of the article that was in the bullet. As i was not able to attend the meeting tonight because I had to be at work, I thought I would share my opinions about it. Firstly, I thought the writer was incredibly aggressive and critical of TDC. There was so much crtiticism of how useless and unrealistic TDC is, and not enough of what La Ceiba is and what it is trying to do. In fact, I don't think La Ceiba was ever brought up. It would perhaps be different and given the article more validity if the writer had fully participated in TDC and then written the article. Also, she could have interviewed participants of TDC to get their side of the story. However, I do think she has certain points that made me question how real my experience was and that perhaps it might have been better to donate the 10 dollars instead of living off of two dollars a day and helping build a 'shelter' that only has to be maintained for five days.
Michelle- I definetly agree, that the writer should have interviewed some participants and perhaps the head of TDC at Mary Wash instead of writing her opinions and assumptions based on what she sees by walking past our shelter. Again, she does bring up points that do make me question exactly how much of a difference I made, and if we could come up with a better way to raise awareness and donations for La Ceiba. I know that the TDC experience has effected me, and ultimately thats what I think really matters
Well glad everyone was able to make it through Day 4 spent all day laying around trying to burn less energy and it worked. i only had to have one meal which means i was able to go get some caffine. half my daily allowance was worth it.
Jeffery - well done sir. i know you are hearing compliments form everyone but just looking at those makes me hungry all this ramen is really getting old.
Day 3 & 4
Yesterday went alright, I found out macaroni and cheese is more expensive than regular pasta so I went with the regular pasta last night. I had cereal in the morning, which was a little more than the eggs I had the day before but saved me time. I’ve been boiling quite a bit of water because I that’s pretty much the only thing I’ve been drinking with the exception of a small glass of milk with my dinner. Today I went back to eating eggs and toast for breakfast. I’ve had PB&J wraps every single day for lunch, that’s getting boring now. I was planning to carpool to work this morning but that fell through so I had to spend double on transportation today. I did actually go under $2 yesterday so I went with macaroni and cheese tonight instead of regular pasta. Today I really wanted to buy a candy bar or something sweet, I managed to get one starburst from someone but that was it. And tonight all I wanted to do was sit in front of the TV and have a beer but I regressed into homework instead. Tomorrow will be tough with it being Friday and all but just one more day!
Day 4 for me was pretty much the same as Michele's. I had my first test under these conditions (not optimal!), and I found it hard to comprehend why someone would use such condescending language in an article that wasn't properly researched. It was really cool to have the discussions this evening. I found that the people in my small groups each found different portions of the experience difficult. For me, it was the lack of nutrients. For others, it was the sleeping conditions or always having to boil more water.
While a few of the girls and I were trying to fix the tent up tonight, we had someone come in and film us, asking questions about the project for his class project. It was cool to actually be interviewed about our ideas and opinions for the project and challenge. He asked good guiding questions; I hope he comes back to film more later! It'd be nice to have an article out that would reflect a truer nature of the TDC.
Another bonus: my food-buddy and I also had a brilliant idea around Tuesday to save money for ice cream... So tonight was the night! We shared a tub between about 5 of us initially, and then shared the rest with the others on Ball Circle. It was heavenly. We were also able to scrounge enough for a 2 litre of Diet Off-Brand Cola, so the caffeine tomorrow morning will be just what we need. I realize that were I to actually live in these conditions, it wouldn't be possible to splurge like that, but it showed me that there is an ability to save even in the hardest of times.

My hat is off the Dean at UMW. It says a lot about a school when the Dean spends time with the students.

Everything you made looks sooooo good!!! I thought Laura and I did pretty well with what we got but your dishes put ours to shame! That all looks like stuff I would normally eat, not just things I would eat during TDC!
