Under a new and innovative business model, for-profits and non-profits can work together to dramatically increase the capital pool available to nonprofit MFIs. The model is called Good Returns: a business agrees to invest its profits each year for a one-year period into MFIs in the form of an interest-free loan. It's a "win-win-win-win" for the business, customers, MFI, and the MFI clients.
I started the first Good Returns model company one year ago, Soap Hope. Soap Hope sel

Washington — The U.S. government has put cash in the hands of Fonkoze, the largest microfinance institution in Haiti, in a mission that required close cooperation of the U.S. military, the United Nations and multiple U.S. government agencies.

Launched in September 2008 by students at the University of Pennsylvania, Givology is an Internet online giving marketplace for education that leverages small dollar donations to support grassroots projects and student scholarships in the developing world. As a person-to-person co…

An Urgent Message to Friends of Fonkoze Regarding the Earthquake
Dear Friend of Fonkoze,
Naturally, all of us who care about Fonkoze and Haiti were alarmed to hear about the tragic earthquake that struck just before 5pm EST yesterday, and wondering what was happening and how we could help. New York State of Mind
A new law on the books since last year in New York helps protect subprime mortgage holders from foreclosure. A similar bill protecting prime borrowers recently was passed by the State Legislature. There are people out there who are struggling to live, and then there are people struggling to get to those who are struggling to live!
I've been trying to get into mfi or voluntary organisations to help, while keeping my day job. But this is increasingly difficult.

I was just cleaning out my inbox and came across a newsletter from Hope International. In it they cite the results of a Barna Research Group study that asked pastors about their understanding of Microfinance. It was surprising to me to find out that 58% said that they have never heard of it. I believe that America's pastors would be some of microfinance's strongest advocates and supporters.
Next time you get a chance to talk to your pastor, won't you please tell them about micofinance? It could…
