Micro financial discussion of America’s future

Micro financial discussion of America’s future

I urge students to join in this discussion. For 33 years my idea of free markets –and media truth - is to get consumers, societies and employees to question what opportunities and risks are compounding in particular markets – eg healthcare, energy, autos, advertising media, education, housing, banking .... Then 2 years ago I started to learn from Dr Yunus and Bangladeshi friends how to add on a second debate revolving round… Continue

Hi Chris,
I think what we are experiencing is an end of the debt based monetary system. It's an old system going back to the middle ages but it's fundamental feature is that booms and busts are a requirement, not an anomaly. We all tend to like things to resolve themselves quickly but I think we are going to go through a series of crises over the next several years. Whether or not debt based systems are good or not is not really relevant at this point, its just that the leverage that is required to pay the interest has reached such astronomical proportions that the whole thing is collapsing. As this happens there are other models that either do or have existed. North Dakota has its own bank, Western Massachusetts has its own currency, there was a monetary system in Europe 50 years ago in which money lost its value if it was not circulated and of course, there is microfinance. I don't know if you have had a chance to see the webcast I did earlier this month for BetterManagement but the link is on my homepage - www.sorms.com.

open gov is accelerating most quickly at the municipal level. cities are opening their data and sponsoring innovation contests around that. my group is starting to move beyond a transparency focus towards allowing for citizen participation in government processes. but it's all still very policy oriented, or tech oriented. we're just starting to talk about creating small working groups around specific issues. not sure there's any concrete connection to microfinance modes just yet.

hoping to be in Europe in the spring. have a wedding in germany in may, so perhaps around then

Hi Chris,
I have a number of things going on. I'm active in the Open Government scene here in the U.S., and I'm working with Tav and those folks on a project called OpenKollab.com that is bringing some urgency and concreteness to the grand Espian vision. I want to keep a connection to MF circles, so that I can eventually deliver something useful. At the moment, I can't contribute much directly.

Hey Chris,

Thanks for the note. As for Microfinance Primary Source - the work I'm doing with this blog is on my own, but I hope that I can continue to help promote microfinance and share as much information as I can while on my trip.

Take care,

Peter

this is slide used at 69th birthday dialogue with dr yunus which took 150 minute and where YAM5000 was one of several projects agreed for action as anyone most connected to yunus tries to help everyone renew yes we can through 09/10 (you may know -eg from chapter of banker for the poor that yes we can was initially dr yunus catchphrase at microcreditsummit 1997 )

to apply ror yam5000 - best is mail mostofa zaman at mostofa12@yahoo.com he is working on this right now with lamiya morshed head of http://yunuscentre.org - what would most excite them is if there is a revolutionary or deep action topic you and some peers want to discuss and do throughout 09/10 of a sort that someone close to yunus can guide you on either his views on his congratulations as you make progress

by all means paste this message in mentioning I said so - invite others to do so as well but this goes back to chpater 11 of book in creating world without poverty where dr yunus most wants Youth ambassadors to team as a small group of people to work together for one year on whatever one focus they choose to try and develop micro up
