A few years back it wasn't that hard to land a job at an MFI. However, with the rising unemployment levels and the increase in interest in microfinance, the HR staff at MFI's has become swamped with an overwhelming number of job applications. In or…

It seems to me like there is an abundance of interest in microfinance and a very limited number of jobs. Even for someone who has had a volunteer or internship experience with an MFI faces difficulty breaking into the microfinance world. If there a…

Hey!

Glad to see someone from Esperanza on the site. Are you there through Hope International? Check out Lindsey Garber's profile. She want an intern with them last summer.
I hope you enjoy your summer in the DR and let me know if there is anything I can do to help!

Hey Tess,
It is always good to connect with fellow Esperanza volunteers. I was there last summer for 3 months in the Hato Mayor office (if you meet any of them, be sure to say hello). Are you there through Hope? Which office are you in? How long have you been there? I'd love to hear about it!

No way! That is craaaaazy! How do you like it? You have to tell Daira and the rest of the office I said hello! Are Ruth, Carmen and Beirut still there? I stayed with Beirut and her family (she wasn't married then). Lucky-you have the cutest little brother, Jose. I looooved him. Hato Mayor and I definitely had a love/hate relationship, but I wouldn't change it for anything. I was there with one of the first official HOPE intern groups and there were 3 of us haha (one in Puerto Plata and one in El Seibo). The intern in E.S. and I traveled some on weekends. We went to Bavaro, San Pedro, Puerto Plata, and explored our little towns. You probably figured it out already, but you have to get pretty creative with your time in that town and at the office (at least in the beginning). How long are you going to be there? I'm getting all nostalgic just thinking about it. Do you keep a blog?

Tess,

Great to hear from you! I'm actually transferring to Brown which means I'm still an undergrad and I don't really know anyone at the school yet. That said, I've met some of the people who started the Capital Good Fund, Brown's first microcredit initiative. Does Kalie know about them?

What are you doing in the Dominican Republic?

Sounds like you are definitely in Hato Mayor! I can relate to pretty much everything you wrote. Not a whole lot to do in that little town, but you should go (if you haven't already). It is very nice and relaxing. Honestly, there isn't much else to do in the town. I'm so happy you mentioned Sophia. She's a saint! I didn't really get to know her well until my last month, but that month was by far the best of my time there. I was over at her house frequently and she introduced me to pretty much everyone she knew. When it came down to it, I really only had one friend who was my age, Jhonatan (ask Sophia about him, maybe he'll be in town some day). All my other friends were the neighbor kids who were under the age of 7 or coworkers. Being a rubia, it definitely takes time to make friends there. I hate to break it to you but the hissing won't stop. As far as physical activity goes, I'm one who has to get out every day, so it was a struggle. I went to an area near my house where they started building roads for future development but then abandoned it. It was perfect for running because the only people there were also there to exercise. I'm not sure how far away it is from Daira's though. I can't believe she's expecting! Tell her I said congrats. How was Samana? What's new?

Also, is there no way to categorize threads within a discussion group? I know of other online forums that can do that (my school's specifically). That would help a lot, as far as keeping track of the different themes people are exploring... Can any…

Clearly, the problem is the lack of lenders who will charge "fair" rates for the lending of capital temporarily and/or pay her the true value of her product. What I find difficult about this question is deciding what are fair lending rates and produ…
