I teach a graduate course in microfinance and am a strong believer in continuous, self-education. One member of this site asked if I could put together a tutorial. I thought I'd invite others who wish to follow the same path and learn together.

Hey Narendran,

I am curious to learn more about the kinds of networking you're doing. Are you networking among MFIs? among supporters? Are you focused on India?

Also, feel free to send any feedback or suggestions regarding The Microfinance Forum along. It's a work in progress.

All the best,
Haley

Wow! This sounds great! I know that a lot of MFIs are looking for a way to share ideas and experiences. I just spent some time in Colombia at at the Regional Microcredit Summit where a number of small MFIs were looking to talk with each other and learn from well tested models of Grameen, Fonkoze, Jamii Bora, and other larger MFIs.

Will your network focus on this sort of material? Will it delve into more of the practicalities? You can e-mail me at globalmicrofinanceforum@gmail.com. Sorry it's such a long e-mail address.

Thanks,
Haley

Dear Narendran,
We can certainly talk about it and exchange ideas. How do you plan to support my wish to start a MFI in Italy for the poor? Please share with me why you are interested. You may have read that I am going to Bangladesh in October to do a training program at Grameen and to learn about the Grameen model. Dr Yunus's is the only micro-credit model I would like to replicate.
Thank you for your interest

Hey Naren,

Yes indeed, I'm originally from India, (am a Bengali, so Kolkata to be precise). In between I've been lucky enough to make some stops in Thailand, South Africa and currently the US.

I'm a Comp Sci/Econ major looking to find a way to put my technology skills to good use. Currently enjoying university/internship life and being in the Microfinance Initiative at Bucknell. So the initiative has two broad objectives. The first being to establish a microfinance fund that loans to low income entrepreneurs all around the world to support the establishment of micro-enterprises. So far this has been solely through Kiva (through whom we make loans using donations). In the long-term I think the plan is move away from relying only on Kiva and establish our own links as well as to return the 'capital' we get from people so that it does not have to be a donation, but more of a real loan. The second objective is to spread awareness/excitement about micro finance in the community. And I guess a third hidden objective is to learn things along the way...hehe.

It appears you've definitely put your skills into good use through the DHAN foundation. The foundation's focus and approach seems fantastic in the sense that it seems to tackle development at the foundations. I would love to hear more about what you are involved with as well as what you see in the near future for DHAN as well as development in general...

As per your suggestion, I am looking forward to discussing/sharing/learning :)

Cheers,
Rishav

Hey Naren,

Sorry...it seems i keep missing you on google chat. Perhaps it'll be easier once I get back to south africa in a week's time to visit home (south africa's been home for the past few years).

I had a quick question though if you have time....have you per chance heard of an organization called Leapfrog Investments?...If so, was wondering if you knew anything more about it beyond what their website describes.

Thanks and hope you're doin well,
Rishav

haha Narendran, great minds really do think alike! We've been talking about developing a Newsletter for quite some time.

Maybe you can help answer some of our questions. How often would you like to receive such a newsletter? Monthly? Weekly? What would you like it to highlight? Microfinance News? New Campaigns? Particularly active blogs? Other MFIs? Student groups? Educational/training opportunities?

I hope you don't mind that I've thrown so many questions at you. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Best,
Haley

Hi Narendran,

I am sorry that it's taken me some time to get back to you. We are working hard at the moment to promote the Microfinance Simulcast class (see the homepage) and to create a more robust store on the site. We did discussion your suggestions for a newsletter and certainly found them very valuable. It may be some time before we have a regular news letter, but keep your eyes open and feel free to send any other suggestions!

Best,
Haley

Hi Narendran

Thanks for the request. Since I am not a microfinance professional, I would love to know more about your work and organisation. I am also interested in volunteering for organisations/NGOs involved in MF. Does your organisation have an office in Delhi?? I would love to get involved.

Best,
eN-Be
