Hi Sasha, Thank you for raising this question and for thinking about sharing space. MFI Connect recommends that student delegates either stay in one of the hotels recommended by The Microcredit Summit Campaign. Those can be found at http://regiona…

I teach a graduate course in microfinance and am a strong believer in continuous, self-education. One member of this site asked if I could put together a tutorial. I thought I'd invite others who wish to follow the same path and learn together.

Community Conversation: The Future of Microfinance

Hi Everyone,

Thank Chris Horst from HOPE International and Milko Markov from Westminster College for joining us as our first "panelists" in the community conversation. Also, thank you to all members who came and contributed to the dialogue.

Below I've listed the conversation in summary not only as a reference, but also to inspire continuous discussion.

- Milko opened with an innovative idea suggesting that students could contribute to the future of microfinance through consulting with borrowe… Continue

Support Grameen America!

Whole Foods Market to Donate 5% ofNew York store sales to Grameen America

On Wednesday, June 24th, Whole Foods Market will donate 5% of sales from all of its New York stores to Grameen America. That day, all purchases will count towards Whole Foods Market's contribution, which will help enable low-income entrepreneurs to start and expand their small businesses. Members of Grameen America staff will be at each of the Whole Foods Market Manhattan stores to answer questions and speak with customer… Continue

Hey Haley,

thanks for your comment! It's nice to see this place is no ghost town.

The MikrofinanzWiki is a website very much like the Microfinance Forum that I'm currently developing for Opportunity International Germany. Its main focus will be to establish a wiki on everything microfinance in German but we will also gather grey literature on the topic. Aside, I hope it will become a place for German microfinance enthusiasts to meet and discuss, also providing an internship database and an calendar for related events etc.
The website is still in development but I hope the basics will be up and running in a few weeks.

Thus, I am quite thrilled to see this forum, which incorporates many aspects of my concept.

I am sure we can work out some synergies between the two sites and I will let you know when there is something to look at (though it'll all be in German...).

Regards from the Baltic Sea,

Basanta

Haley,

I'm glad to hear those boys still talk about me. This website is incredible; how/when did this happen? I think it's a fabulous idea and I'd love to find a way to get involved. What were you doing in Colombia?

Brown has a microcredit organization called the Capital Good Fund. However, I've just been accepted as a transfer student so I haven't yet had a chance to get involved.

Tell me more!

Hi Haley!

Thanks for the comment. At the University of Florida, there are a small number of us involved in an organization called Children's Hope India, which helps provide microloans outside of Delhi.

There aren't any microfinance organizations on campus that support microfinance in the US, however. That was originally one of my goals in doing my research project to start a lending org, but due to funding, I won't be able to start it this coming year.

Regarding my research project, I am working on a survey to send out to MFIs and borrowers regarding the specific use of the loans, repayment rates, how success is defined etc. Any help you could give would be appreciated! :)

Do you think someone at Grameen America would be interested in completing my survey (once it is finalized) and perhaps giving it to borrowers as well?

Thanks for everything!

Meg

Hi Haley,

Thank you for your message. Yes, there's talk about starting a Grameen in Italy but I think it is going to take some time. I have not heard about what you mentioned in Florence. I think it might be based somewhere else. Dr. Yunus was in Italy in March and he met with Unicredit, one of the major Italian banks to discuss a possible Grameen Italy.

At the moment I am trying to get some Italian companies to start a social business and to broaden their mindset. I am not directly involved in microfinance..I only believe in what Dr. Yunus founded..I only follow his model, which seems to work just about everywhere in the world. If it starts in Italy I will surely apply for a job there. I read his books and I am going to Bangladesh in October to do a training program at Grameen.

Well done on this website! It's a good network.

Take care and have a good day!

On books, have you come across freedom from want, by Ian Smillie -story of brac. I find grameen and brac the perfectly segmented/collaborative couple for bottom-up sustainability investors save the world - brac's difference is to build up whole industry sectors for the poor - eg all poultry or all live stock - as well as being prepared to turn what would otherwise be top-down government aid programs bottom up which was its origin- about 2 years before dr yunus returned to chittagong early 1970s the worst ever cyclone caused a tsunami near chittagong twice as large in terms of fatalities as 2004's in se asia- Back then Fazle Abed was just about the only relief networker left on the ground - as well as disaster relief it soon became natural to trust brac networking as best at rural children's pediatrics (oral rehydration) nurses and primary schools. Muahammad and Fazle - the 2 greats of our tmes imo. & my daughters yunuschoolusa
