Get Ready for Challenge Week, 2010!

Nearly half of the World’s population lives on $2 per day. For one week we’re asking you to join them. This Challenge Week is an experience designed to offer students a glimpse of how the other half of the world lives. Participants are presented with the challenge of living on $2 a day for five days while following a number of other rules. Throughout this week students are able to raise both awareness about global poverty and funds to direct towards their own initiative. Students are empowered through the funds they raise and the networks they build with others who share in the experience.

During the month of April (from April 3 to April 30), college students across the country will participate in our initiative, directing Challenge Week on their respective campuses.

Today at Dollar General I was able to buy pineapple slices, soup, peanuts, toothpaste, and deodorant for about $5.  Now, thinking about that in the short term, I'm only doing this for a week.  Cutting back on expenditures for a week is a lot easier than cutting back on expenditures for a year? 3 years? a lifetime?  All I've had to eat today was a handful of peanuts.  The remaining food I've saved for tomorrow and Wednesday.  I'm wondering how I'm gonna make it through this week on so little.  But after this week, that's it.  I go back to being a college student, the uncertainty is only temporary for me.  For others it's not.  I can't imagine what it's like to live on such a small income.  The rest of this week will give me a small insight into the lives of the poor.  This insight will influence my own life.  I have a feeling my perspective will be changed greatly by the end of this challenge.

In response to Dallys-Tom post: He is very insightful as to the variety of the power that $2 has in the world. So hard to believe that in the States and the Front Range of Colorado, there is not much power in $2!

What a first day. It was actually my birthday and the first one without a cake or a nice meal. It showed me how something like a birthday takes a different turn when you hit middle age and can't have a nice meal or glass of wine to celebrate another year of survival!

There are some parts of the world where people are happy with $2 and can fulfill all their basic needs. There are other places where people don't even find a dollar because there is no economic activity. The key point is whether communities have access to water, food, health care, education, sustainable economic activity, etc. This is the kind of initiatives that raise global awareness about these issues. Keep it up!
