Harnessing Student Potential In Microfinance

Do Joint MFI Projects Work? If so can student projects be the leaders in this approach?

Please excuse my ignorance of your programs so if what I am saying is off base or false please don’t take offence.

I am wondering if MF projects ever work with larger initiatives and if they are successful? For, example what if a larger amount was funded that in turn could be used by numerous people to earn an income with very little investment if any.

Key to success would be to control the market in that you could not have too many people using the main project to earn money or there would be too much competition.

Our group has access to several technologies that I have always thought could benefit hundreds of MF companies as long as we could:

a)      Control the source of goods

b)      Provide consistent delivery of product

c)       Be able to withdraw service if someone abused the system

d)      Provide the service with little to zero start up costs for the MF person

e)      Provide tracking of profit/loss to help with success

f)       Display a common logo to provide brand awareness and quality assurance

Some Examples

  1. A clean water system that would in turn have people sell/deliver that water.
  2. Provide bulk long distance that can be resold at very low rates
  3. Grow organic food for distribution to smaller venues
  4. Provide power to groups of homes or small businesses in remote areas
  5. Convert waste into compost quickly for local sale

More ambitious projects would be to provide a small group with the ability to put up quality low income housing. We are in the process of helping in this area by arranging for trade instead of cash. This way the builder does not have to come up very much initial money to get the house built and then paid for.  Each situation has to be looked at of course for we cannot trade everything.
